Report: Bristol Rugby 41-28 Yorkshire Carnegie

Bristol Rugby booked their place in the B&I Cup semi-finals with a convincing 41-28 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie on Friday.

Andy Robinson’s side scored five tries as Josh Ovens (2), George Watkins, Jack O’Connell and Charlie Amesbury touched down at Ashton Gate.

Carnegie’s Grimoldby missed the target with a long range penalty effort early on, before George Watkins marked his return to the starting line-up with a blistering try from thirty metres, while Robinson slotted the extras.

Yorkshire hit back through skipper Chris Jones, who collected Oli Goss’ inside pass to bundle his way across the whitewash for a converted score.

Nicky Robinson’s three pointer nudged the home side back in front, before Josh Ovens crashed over from five metres to extend Bristol’s lead to 17-7.

But Carnegie responded in immediate fashion when David Doherty pounced on a defensive error to slide over, while Grimoldby converted expertly from a narrow angle.

And the visitors added a quickfire second when Sam Egerton scooped up a loose ball and accelerated in unopposed from fifty metres to put Yorkshire ahead.

Bristol had the final word before the half-time interval as Jack O’Connell burrowed his way over for his first try in Bristol colours. Robinson’s conversion handed his side a 24-21 advantage.

Josh Ovens’ second of the evening – converted by Robinson – gave Bristol breathing space, before George Watkins was sin-binned after referee Craig Maxwell-Keyes spotted a deliberate knock-on.

Robinson slotted a simple penalty goal to keep the scoreboard ticking over at 34-21, but Oli Goss’ superb try – collecting Egerton’s deft offload to dot down - ensured a tense finish at Ashton Gate.

In the closing stages, replacement Charlie Amesbury powered over in the corner to wrap up the win and confirm Bristol’s place in the semi-finals.
