Report: Leinster 'A' 50-15 Bristol United

Bristol United went down 50-15 to a strong Leinster ‘A’ outfit on Friday evening.

The visitors – the youngest side Bristol have fielded so far this season with an average age of 23.8 – conceded eight tries in a one-sided affair at Donnybrook.

United touched down for three scores of their own, as Sam Graham and Iwan Hughes (2) crossed.

What happened?

Leinster’s Ed Byrne rumbled over from close-range early on, while – minutes later – Tommy O’Brien exploited space down the outside channel to race in for a second converted try.

But, after a shaky start, Bristol United found a route back into the game when Sam Graham crossed following a sweeping counter attack.

The hosts hit back through Conor O’Brien’ effort – ably converted by Cathal Marsh to move the score to 21-5 – before Jack Wallace’s last-ditch cover tackle prevented a fourth Leinster touch down in the opening period.

Nick McCarthy darted blind from the base of a scrum to go over for the bonus point, leaving Bristol United with a mountain to climb on the half hour mark.

Joe Batley on the charge for Bristol United (JMP UK).

Then, on the stroke of half time, McCarthy was on hand to bag his second of the evening as United struggled to stem the relentless flow of Leinster ‘A’ attacks.

Following a raft of replacements at the interval, Leinster’s Peadar Timmins broke free of several tackles to go in under the posts as the hosts stretched their advantage to 40-5.

Soon after, the United defence faltered again as Bryan Byrne scrambled over following a powerful surge at the scrum.

The skipper added a quickfire second, before Iwan Hughes responded with his first try for the club, sliding over in the corner.

Hughes crossed once again as Bristol United enjoyed a spell in the ascendancy late in the game, but Leinster ‘A’ ran out comfortable winners at 50-15.

Key moment:

Bristol United conceded two early tries to trail 14-0 inside five minutes and it left the visitors a mountain to climb against a well-drilled Leinster 'A' outfit.

Although the visitors rallied late on, the first half deficit - trailing 33-5 at the interval - was too much for Bristol to overcome.

Man of the match: Ryan Edwards

One of the more senior players in the Bristol United side this evening, Ryan Edwards defended stoutly and showed a positive throughout, despite the difficult circumstances.

The winger communicated well and delivered some thumping tackles in defence, while his determined break led to Iwan Hughes' crossing for his first try of the afternoon.

With Bristol United on the back foot for long periods of the game, Edwards showed plenty of bite and commitment to keep battling until the final whistle at an icy cold Donnybrook.
