Bakewell joins Leicester Tigers with immediate effect

Mark Bakewell has accepted the role of forwards coach at Leicester Tigers, the club can confirm.

The highly respected New Zealand born coach – who joined in February 2016 – agrees a three-year deal at Welford Road and departs with immediate effect.

“Mark [Bakewell] and I had a good discussion about the three-year contract offer on the table and it’s a great opportunity for him,” said Lam.

“Leicester has a traditionally forwards orientated game that will suit Bakes’ coaching style. His son, Jesse, has also been given a role in the S&C department so it’s an easy decision for him and his family.

“We wish Mark all the best in his new chapter at Leicester Tigers and he departs with our gratitude for the effort and hard work he has put in for our pack.”

Bakewell celebrates promotion at Ashton Gate in 2016 (JMP UK).

Bakewell helped Bristol to promotion from the Championship in 2016 and leaves with the club undefeated at the top of the league, thirteen points clear of second placed Ealing.

He added: “It’s been a privilege to be part of Bristol Rugby’s journey over the past two years and I’ve enjoyed working with the players and staff at the club.

“I leave with the club in a strong position and looking forward to a bright future under Pat [Lam] and the coaching team. I wish them – and all the supporters – the very best and hope to see Bristol in the Premiership next season.”
