GRFU competition opens last weekend

The GRFU U18 South Development league got underway this weekend with ten local clubs – Cleve, Clifton, Cheltenham Saracens, Gordano, Nailsea and Backwell, St Brendans Old Boys, Winscombe, Thornbury, Cotham Park and Keynsham – entered into the competition.

The sides will play each other home and away with a finals day at Clifton RFC. The victors of the finals will play the winners of the Northern section for the national prize in May, 2014.

The league aims to increase participation for 17 to 19 year olds, providing a competitive platform to prepare young players for adult rugby in their local club.

Thornbury 22-7 Cheltenham Saracens

Thornbury overcame an abrasive visiting Cheltenham side to record a four-try victory in the league opener.

Matt Holliday, John Hudson and Kaine Duffety (2) all crossed for the home side.

Keynsham 24-10 Nailsea

Keynsham fought back from a ten point deficit to record a 24-10 win over Nailsea.

Frank Spitzer, Joe Philips, Andy Strachan and Toby Williams all grabbed tries for the home side.

St Brendans 44-22 Cotham Park

St Brendan’s secured a try-scoring bonus point, running out comfortable winners over Cotham Park. Due to no pitch being available at Coombe Dingle, the fixture was moved to Cotham.

Clifton 7-46 Cleve

Clifton were unable to raise a side for this fixture and conceded the result to Cleve. Instead, a friendly game was played with Cleve running out convincing winners.

Gordano versus Winscombe was postponed until later in the season.
