Sherratt pleased with cup comeback

Matt Sherratt hailed the courage of his young players after Bristol Rugby turned around a ten-point deficit to seal a 21-17 victory over Leeds in the opening round of the B&I Cup.

"We’ve kept our positive run of results going and that’s great for confidence in the group"

Bristol trailed 7-17 early in the second period, but tries from Andy Short and Ben Glynn ensured a win in torrential conditions.

“It was a very pleasing result. We showed a huge amount of courage and determination to get over the line,” Sherratt told bristolrugby.co.uk.

“During the first half, we had a lot of control, but the scoreboard didn’t reflect that and players can get frustrated and try and force things.

"We made mistakes at key times which gave Leeds a confidence boost – they were a composed side and caused us problems on Sunday. We told them at half time to keep doing what they are doing and the chances will come.

“I’m delighted for the young guys who made their debuts. We told them to enjoy wearing a Bristol shirt. They’re locally born lads who grew up watching the Club on the terraces – it’s a fantastic experience for them.

“We want to make winning a habit at the Memorial Stadium, with teams turning not expecting to win. We’ve kept our positive run of results going and that’s great for confidence in the group.

“In terms of the long term development of the players, it’s great to get a win on debut, especially because it’s in front of the home supporters.”
