Lock focused on toughest challenge of season

Mariano Sambucetti insists Bristol have not given up hope of achieving a place in the RFU Championship play-offs.

Bristol face unbeaten Newcastle on Saturday knowing that a victory could secure a top-four finish.

And the Argentinian lock-forward, who has been in blistering recent form, says the players are relishing the task ahead.

“It’s a tough ask and the odds are against us,” admitted Sambucetti. “But that’s the beauty of sport and that’s why we play rugby – it’s unpredictable.

“There’s no point in us worrying about what the teams around us are doing, we have to go to Kingston Park and play arguably the strongest – and most consistent - side in the league.

“They will want to finish the regular season unbeaten so they won’t take us lightly. We’ll show them plenty of respect, but at the same time, we believe we have the quality to beat them.

“The manner in which we beat London Scottish and the desire we showed with ball in hand is something we can build on in what will be our toughest challenge of the campaign.

“Our form and performances have improved over the past month as the guys learn the new systems and thrive in the attacking environment that has been instilled.

“We’ll keep building and give it everything on Saturday because we don’t want this season to end just yet and we’re desperate to make that top four.”
