Hooker previews final pre-season clash

Ross Johnston expects Bristol to bounce back against Clifton RFC in the traditional pre-season friendly on Sunday (3pm KO).

“Nobody is dwelling on the defeats or moping about – it’s exactly what we need to give us a kick"

The hooker made his first appearance of the pre-season campaign as Bristol fell to a 51-7 defeat to Exeter last weekend.

Andy Robinson’s men failed to record a win in two friendly fixtures against top-flight opposition, but Johnston insists the players have learned a lot from the experience.

“We’ve had a tough pre-season so far and our weaknesses have been exposed by two very good sides in Bath and Exeter,” he told bristolrugby.co.uk.

“The players have learned a lot from those two games: what it takes to play at the top level and what we need to do if we want to be successful this season.

“Nobody is dwelling on the defeats or moping about – it’s exactly what we need to give us a kick before the new campaign.

“Clifton will be a different kind of challenge this weekend. For the first time during pre-season, we’ll go into the game as favourites, although we know that we cannot take them lightly.

“They will be passionate and out to prove a point against us, so it’s important we put on a good display in front of a lot of our supporters.”
