Eves: Accuracy Cost Us

Centre reflects on Pirates defeat

Luke Eves admitted that Bristol Rugby must improve after an opening day 23-21 loss to Cornish Pirates at Sandy Park.

“It wasn’t good enough from us on Sunday. We have a long way to go but we can put things right.”

The centre crossed for a last-gasp try, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat in an error-ridden display from Andy Robinson’s side.

“It’s hard to be positive when we haven’t lived up to the expectation,” Eves told bristolrugby.co.uk. “We didn’t play the conditions right and now we are left to lick our wounds.

“We had scoring opportunities but, unfortunately, we just didn’t take them. Pirates are a quality side and if you don’t take your chances, you’ll get beaten.

“We pride ourselves on playing the ball better, but we were inaccurate – knocking on close to the line and passes not going to hand.

“I think even if [Adrian] Jarvis had got the conversion, we wouldn’t have been happy with the draw because the performance wasn’t there.

“Ultimately it comes down to being smart in the right areas of the field. It’s not where you start; it’s where you finish so while the performance isn’t acceptable, we will be ready to go again.
