London Wasps U18s 40-24 Bristol Academy U18s

Bristol Academy U18s went down 40-24 to London Wasps in an entertaining encounter at Maidenhead RFC on Saturday.

Played on an IRB-approved 4G surface, Bristol went close early on when centre Lucas Slowik was bundled into touch five metres from the line.

But it was the home side who seized the initiative, crossing twice in quick succession to race into a 12-0 lead.

James Floyd’s converted try kept Bristol in touch, and Lucas Slowik’s close-range effort gave the visitors a narrow 12-14 advantage at the break.

Wasps came back strongly in the second period, crossing twice to go 26-14 up, before captain Joe Joyce powered over to reduce the deficit to 29-19.

Prop Tom Boot added a further try for Bristol, but two more Wasps efforts – including a late interception – gave the London side the spoils.

“It was a pleasing step forward for the second half of the game versus Harlequins,” said Academy Manager Mike Hall. “We set the players some non-negotiables before we went out and they ticked all of those boxes as a group.

“The one area where as a group we need to improve is our execution. We made three small errors - a missed penalty kick to touch, a lost lineout and a poor restart kick - which cost us twenty-one points.

“We have got to realise that at this level we will be punished even for small errors. The attacking mindset of the team is really pleasing and credit must go to Attack Coach Keith Leaker, as we have scored ten tries in our three games.

“We now start to look forward to the Bath game with real anticipation. Any Bath versus Bristol clash has an edge about it and we will be working hard this week to make sure that when we turn up at the Rec next Monday night we are emotionally and technically ready for the challenge that the Bath team will pose.”

Bristol Academy U18s take on Bath Academy U18s at the Recreation Ground on Monday, 11 February (7.45pm KO).
