Errie Claassens Seals Move To Bristol

Utility back makes Memorial Stadium switch

Bristol Rugby’s push for the Aviva Premiership has been boosted by the arrival of versatile utility back Errie Claassens.

The 31 year-old - who joins after a successful spell in the top flight with Worcester Warriors – has committed to the Club for the 2013/14 campaign.

The English-qualified South African made twenty-six appearances at Sixways, scoring seven tries.

A pacy runner with a sublime try-scoring record, Claassens spent six seasons in the RFU Championship with Rotherham Titans and London Welsh, racking up over three-hundred points and earning a place in the Rugby Paper’s 2009/10 ‘Dream Team.’

“We’re delighted to secure Errie’s services for next season,” said Head Coach Liam Middleton. “He’s a hugely talented individual who gives us options in a number of positions across the backline.

“I’ve always been impressed with Errie, particularly the threat that he poses in attack. His accurate left footed kicking ability is of huge value to us.

“Having watched him in the Aviva Premiership over the last two seasons, he became a key target for me as we continue to develop our Club, our team and Bristol Fashion.

“His performances in the top flight have led to me to believe that he will have a significant impact at Bristol. After spending time discussing rugby with Errie, I was certain he was a perfect fit for our culture.”

Claassens, the brother of Bath’s international scrum-half Michael, won representative honours with Free State at Under-19 and Under-21 level, as well as playing for the Free State Cheetahs and gaining Currie Cup experience with Griquas Rugby.

“I’m pleased to be joining a Club with such strong traditions and values,” added Claassens. “I still have ambitions to play at the top level and I firmly believe I can achieve that here at Bristol.

“Liam [Middleton] spoke about his vision and buying into the culture at Bristol Rugby. I’m excited to be here and to be pulling on the blue and white jersey.”
