Eves: We're Back On Track
Centre delighted with 'season-defining' result
Luke Eves insists Bristol’s push for a place in the RFU Championship top four is back on track after a nailbiting 12-9 victory over Leeds Carnegie on Friday evening.
The hosts survived a second-half fightback to secure the spoils in a scrappy affair at the Memorial Stadium.
“It’s a tremendous victory and an absolutely crucial result for us,” said the ever-present centre. “We can’t sugar coat it – lose and we would have been out of the running for a place in the play-offs.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s fifty points or three, the result was the only thing that mattered and we’re delighted that it went our way.
“It’s a season-defining result for us. I think we’re back on track now and looking forward to a busy February. It was so tight at the end, so to come away with a hard-earned victory is a fantastic feeling.”
Bristol had fly half Adrian Jarvis to thank for their points haul, but Eves believes it was up front where the foundations for victory were laid.
He added: “In conditions like that, it’s not really a game for the backs. We had to rely on the boys up front and they came through well. The forwards were excellent and they earned us that lead in the first period.
“We spoke at half-time about not conceding early after the break, but unfortunately we did. We had to keep calm and I thought we did well at the end to keep them pinned in their own 22.”
