Williams: Win Was A Team Performance
Winger pleased with convincing B&I Cup victory
Matt Williams paid tribute to his teammates after Bristol Rugby’s 32-8 victory over Bridgend on Saturday.
The England Sevens winger – making his first appearance since October – scored twice in an impressive performance at Riverside Hardware Brewery Field.
“It was good to come away with the five points,” said Williams. “It was a team performance and credit has to go to the team as a whole – the boys played well.
“We started slowly and the first half was a very scrappy, niggly affair. We had plenty of possession but we didn’t do much with it.
“At half-time, we knew we needed to be more clinical and that if we kept going and continued to apply pressure, Bridgend would eventually crack.
“That’s what happened, and I think the try from George [Watkins] early in the second half really propelled us forward.
“Pool 1 is a tough group with three difficult sides, so to come away with three wins from three so far is something that we are very pleased with.
“We will need to build on that again this week in front of our home crowd and the players really enjoy Friday night rugby at the Mem.
“From a personal point of view, it was a great buzz to score. Fortunately, I was in the right place at the right time and I have my teammates to thank for that.
“I just have to keep taking my opportunities when I get them. It was a bit of shame to concede that late try because we wanted to keep them out, but overall we’re satisfied with the display.”
