Maoris Put Championship XV To The Sword
RFU Championship XV 21 - 52 New Zealand Maori
Tristan Roberts and the RFU Championship XV went down 21-52 to the Maori All Blacks at Castle Park on Saturday.
The Bristol fly-half kicked two first half penalties, but a late flurry of tries gave the touring side an emphatic victory.
The Maori All Blacks crossed eight times in total, with Declan O'Donnell, Kurt Baker, Hika Elliot, Trent Renata, Frae Wilson, Romana Graham and Jackson Willison all adding their names to the scoresheet.
Mike Rayer’s men – who matched their opponents for much of the first period – responded with two tries, courtesy of Dante Mama (Doncaster) and Rhys Crane (Nottingham).
“I’m extremely proud and it was all about the players today,” said Rayer. “We gave them a framework and they were absolutely terrific.
“They emptied their tanks, as they said they would, and I couldn’t ask for any more. We showed good intent, backed ourselves and the score-line probably flattered the Maori.”
