Jon Goodridge hailed the ‘amazing’ team spirit at Bristol Rugby following the semi-final defeat to Cornish Pirates.
The full-back, who scored twice at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday, said the players had come a long way during the 2011/12 season.
“This team and coaching staff have been together for a year,” he said. “No-one expected us to do as well as we did. From the first game in Biarritz, we knew we had a strong group of players.
“We’re a tight-knit unit and we will come back stronger after getting over the hurt. The team spirit has been amazing all season – the boys were all texting and emailing each other in the build-up to Sunday’s game.
“Losing in the semi-finals really hurts, but that’s the cruel nature of sport. We switched off for ten minutes and, after thirty games, our season came down to that.”
Goodridge was left to rue missed opportunities on Sunday, admitting Bristol left ‘three or four tries on the pitch’.
“We left ourselves a lot to do but we proved we could beat them,” he said. “We’ll take heart from that performance because nobody gave us a chance.
“We stuck at it for a full eighty minutes and we will take heart from our performance – not just on Sunday but throughout the season.”
