Will Helu insists that Bristol Rugby will pick themselves up from the heavy 45-24 defeat at Mennaye Field and ‘prove themselves’ on Sunday in the second leg.
The Tongan, who scored a try either side of half time, says the players can’t afford to dwell on the loss.
“Our backs are against the wall now,” said Helu. “We have to prove ourselves at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday. There is one more day and one more chance – we’re still in this race.
“We can’t dwell on this defeat – we’ve been competitive throughout the regular season and play-offs and we have to remain confident in our own ability.”
Despite leading at the break, Bristol head into the return clash facing an uphill battle following a disappointing second half performance.
Helu commented: “We gave away too many penalties and handed Cornish Pirates the initiative. They took their chances and we didn’t.
“I made some mistakes in the second period and that massively outweighs any positives I might have taken from scoring.
“It’s a short turnaround before Sunday so we need to keep our spirits up and throw everything we have at Pirates in the return leg.”
