Post Tour de France in aid of Bristol Rugby's sick mascot
Hi guys

i'm the friend-of-a-friend mentioned in the Evening Post story below, basically I'm doing what I can to help up the sponsorship figures todate (Robbie was the break-dancing bear, usually seen doing the worm, one-arm pressups and chassing the opposition around the park, he was also Mitsu):

Robbie Stuart, who until recently donned the Brizzley Bear outfit during games, has leukaemia and is in an isolation ward at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Friend-of-a-friend Ian Callaghan, 27, decided to undertake the gruelling 2,200-mile ride to raise £10,000 for CLIC Sargent and Macmillan Cancer Support.

He will take on what many consider to be the toughest challenge in sport with Glasgow accountant and old friend Matthew Ulyatt,

The pair are set to clock up 100 miles a day for 23 days with just two days off.

They will set off on July 7 and cycle two days behind the actual race, known as "Le Tour", and its world class riders.

Mr Callaghan, an associate at Stoke Gifford Dental Surgery, will ride a 10-year-old Peugeot Competition 510 bike for the feat.

He said: "It's the most gruelling event there is.

"By any normal person's imagination, it's ridiculous.

"It's the same as riding from Bristol to London every day.

"The whole thing is like riding from Land's End to John O'Groats two to three times.

"We're not going to be racing - that's super-human.

"But we are going to be riding for 12 hours a day.

"Our friends and colleagues think we're crazy.

"Even the people we used to ride with tell us, 'leave it alone, it's not for amateurs'.

"But we aren't looking at breaking records, just getting round."

Mr Callaghan used to race with an amateur club as a teenager.

He only got seriously back into cycling in the second half of last year.

"I did 130 miles on Sunday. Quite often I go to Gloucester, on to Monmouth, along the Wye Valley through Chepstow, then across the Severn Bridge and back to Bristol," he said.

"We're doing this because we've watched the Tour de France for years. It's the pinnacle - the World Cup final of cycling.

"It's the event everyone's heard of and only the best get to do.

"It's going to be effort every day for 23 days. But I think we'll do it.

"We could get tendonitis and mech-anical problems, but our aim is to do it in the same number of days as the professionals ahead of us.

"I chose the two charities because a friend of a friend, Robbie Stuart, is fighting leukaemia.

"I've been on a stag do with him and other nights out. My boss's niece has leukaemia too."l To find out more or to donate, visit www.ianandmatt.blogspot.com or email ian_callaghan@yahoo.com.

Do you have a "Just giving" account. It would be easy then for us to contribute.

Hi Millard. Have you spoken to the club about some support? Perhaps collection buckets or a blanket collection?

What do you think about Rugby and Cricket as opposed to American football and baseball? Im interested as how the americans see rugby and cricket and how the rugby or cricket nations see the aforementioned american games.

Hi Millard
I hope you raise the money and much more, good luck to Mr Ulyatt and Mr Callaghan! The author Tim Moore rode the Tour route in 2000 for fun and wrote a book about it, it's called French Revolutions and is a great read and should give you an idea of what they're letting themselves in for!!!

All the best bud

C'mon Bris!
