Mosses returns to first team action

Ben Mosses is set for his first start since November when Bristol Rugby face Aberavon in Pool Five of the B&I Cup on Sunday (3pm KO).

Academy utility back Auguy Slowik retains his place in the backline, while Andy Short – who has four tries in four Cup games – is named on the wing.

In the pack, James Merriman and Iain Grieve earn starts, while Ben Skirving skippers the side from No. 8.

The replacements bench sees a four forwards and three backs split, with Academy prop will Davis included in the 22-man squad.

MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs Aberavon

Bristol Rugby 64-8 Aberavon RFC

Bristol Rugby moved back to the top of Pool Five with a convincing 64-8 victory over Aberavon at the Memorial Stadium.

The home side scored ten tries in the B&I Cup rout as Andy Short grabbed a hat-trick and Auguy Slowik added a brace. Luke Eves, James Hall, Charlie Amesbury, Ruki Tipuna and Joe Joyce also crossed in a one-sided affair.

Bristol wasted little time in stamping their authority on the game, controlling possession in the opening ten minutes and going close through Iain Grieve and Andy Short.

But the visitors found their feet and could have gone in front on the quarter hour if Luke Price had found the target with his attempted drop goal. Instead, it was full back Ross Jones who struck a penalty goal to give Aberavon a 0-3 lead.

Adrian Jarvis was inches away from rounding off a flowing counter attack, before Jack Jones saw yellow, reducing Aberavon to fourteen men.

Bristol capitalized on the numerical advantage on the half hour mark, as James Hall dabbed down through a heap of bodies to edge the home side ahead at 5-3.

The hosts added a second try moments later as Andy Short – who has scored in every B&I Cup fixture this season - collected Jarvis’ offload to slide over for a converted score.

Taking a stranglehold on proceedings, Bristol pushed further ahead when Auguy Slowik cantered through a gaping hole in the Wizards’ midfield to touch down under the posts. Jarvis slotted the extras to put his side 19-3 up.

And the bonus point was sealed before the half-time interval as Charlie Amesbury showed lightning acceleration to outpace two defenders and fly across the whitewash for a converted try.

Within minutes of the restart, Luke Eves latched onto Ben Mosses’ intelligent offload to convert a superb backline attack in front of the Blackthorn Terrace. Jarvis’ straightforward conversion put Bristol in control at 33-3.

Academy flyer Auguy Slowik’s second try of the afternoon – after good work from Adrian Jarvis – saw the home side reached the forty-point mark, while victory was effectively sealed when Andy Short crossed for a seventh score, converted by the impressive Jarvis.

Short confirmed his hat-trick on the hour mark, beating his opposite number to scoop up Adrian Jarvis’ crossfield kick and dart over for a converted try.

With the visiting defence flagging, the procession of tries continued as Ruki Tipuna crossed in the driving rain, before Auguy Slowik came close to adding another soon after, galloping eighty metres downfield in a fine solo break.

Jack Tovey had a try disallowed, but Bristol did notch a tenth score when Academy lock Joe Joyce dotted down for his first try for the Club following a powerful driving lineout.

James Hall was sin-binned before Aberavon’s Nicky Thomas grabbed a consolation score late on, but it mattered little as Bristol ran out comfortable winners at the Memorial Stadium.
