Rupert Freestone set for first start

Rupert Freestone will make his first competitive start for the Club when Bristol face Gala in Pool Five of the B&I Cup on Saturday (3pm KO).

The hooker is included in a new-look front row as Bristol look to extend their 100% record in the competition this season.

Jack Tovey returns at full back, while Andy Short – who has three tries to his name in the B&I Cup so far – starts on the wing.

Bristol retain a four forwards and three backs split on the replacements bench, with Ruki Tipuna and Adrian Jarvis included in the 22-man squad.

MATCH DAY REPORT -Gala vs Bristol Rugby

Bristol Rugby 17-6 Gala RFC

Bristol Rugby extended a 100% record in the B&I Cup with a 17-6 defeat of Gala in torrential conditions on Saturday.

The visitors crossed for three first half tries, as Ryan Edwards and Andy short dotted down, before Iain Grieve powered over on the stroke of half-time.

In a relentless downpour, Bristol went in front early on as Ryan Edwards darted his way over from eight metres after being released by Redford Pennycook.

But a scrappy first period saw Gala find a route back into the game, courtesy of two David O’Hagan penalty goals to turn the game on its head at 6-5.

With errors aplenty from both sides, Andy Short was first to react to a Gregor Mein slip, scooping up possession and sliding over in the corner for an unconverted try.

And, on the stroke of half-time, the impressive Iain Grieve accelerated between two defenders to cross under the posts. Tristan Roberts’ simple conversion gave Bristol breathing space at 6-17 at the interval.

In a turgid Pool Five affair, Redford Pennycook and Andy Short came close to a bonus point try after the break, while Gala’s best opportunity fell to Gregor Mein.

Iain Grieve received a yellow card for obstruction late on, but the visitors – reduced to fourteen men - held out for a hard-earned Cup win.
