MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs Gala

Bristol Rugby 62-7 Gala RFC

Bristol Rugby romped to a 62-7 victory over Gala in the B&I Cup on Sunday.

The hosts scored ten tries in the Pool Five clash at the Memorial Stadium as Callum Braley bagged a hat-trick, while Lucas Slowik and Ellis Genge touched down on debut.

Iain Grieve notched a double, while Andy Short, Redford Pennycook and Ollie Hayes also crossed during the rout.

Bristol went in front inside five minutes as Iain Grieve rounded off a well-organised driving lineout to dab down for an unconverted score.

The hosts came close to a second try following debutant Lucas Slowik’s fine solo break. The centre was hauled down illegally by Craig Borthwick – who saw yellow for his misdemeanor – and Bristol took full advantage soon after.

Fautua Otto carved an opening in the midfield before offloading to Callum Braley who coasted in under the posts for a converted try.

The scrum half added a quickfire second moments later, stretching over after Lucas Slowik had galloped clear - extending Bristol’s advantage to 17-0 midway through the first period.

The procession of points continued as Bristol went over for the bonus point try, courtesy of the impressive Lucas Slowik.

The 17 year-old muscled his way across the whitewash from close-range, while Adrian Jarvis slotted the extras.

And Ollie Hayes was next to cross, capitalizing on Andy Short’s burst clear to touch down and put the home side in control at 31-0.

Short marked a strong first half showing with Bristol’s sixth try of the afternoon, cantering over in the corner to heap misery on the ragged Gala defence.

There was still time before the half-time interval for Iain Grieve to beat two defenders and burrow over for his second try. Jarvis struck the conversion to give side an imposing 45-0 lead at the break.

Bristol reached the fifty-point mark ten minutes after the restart as Redford Pennycook touched down following another surge at the driving lineout.

Callum Braley sealed his hat-trick when the Academy scrum half ghosted through the Gala defence to fly over. Jarvis slotted the conversion as Bristol moved 57-0 up.

Replacement prop Ellis Genge marked his competitive debut for the Club with a try minutes later, showing great feet to waltz over from eight metres.

Gala grabbed a consolation try when Ben Toolis bundled his way over from close range after Bristol had lost replacement Steve Uren to the sin-bin.
