MATCH DAY REPORT -Cornish Pirates vs Bristol Rugby

Bristol Rugby 15-21 Cornish Pirates

Bristol Rugby fell to a 21-15 loss at the hands of Cornish Pirates in a pulsating encounter on Sunday.

Bristol held a narrow lead at Mennaye Field, courtesy of tries from Ross Johnston and Luke Eves either side of half time, but a Kieran Goss double condemned the visitors to defeat.

Cornish Pirates had two opportunities at goal inside the opening ten minutes, but Angus Sinclair directed his penalty efforts wide of the target.

Bristol enjoyed a spell of pressure thereafter but, despite plenty in possession in the opposition 22, couldn’t engineer a clear-cut opening.

Instead, the deadlock was broken courtesy of Nicky Robinson’s simple penalty goal after the spirited home defence had strayed offside.

The visitors pushed further ahead moments later, as Ross Johnston rounded off a strong driving lineout to burrow over from close-range for an unconverted try.

Pirates found a route back into the game with an opportunist try on the half-hour mark. Kieran Goss showed quick thinking to scoop up a loose ball and race in from forty-five metres. Sinclair slotted the extras to bring his side back within a point at 7-8.

Cornish Pirates were reduced to fourteen men after Peter Joyce’s sin-binning for persistent infringement before the half-time break, but Bristol couldn’t capitalize on the extra man.

In a fiercely contested second period, Angus Sinclair struck the upright with a mammoth penalty effort, before Ben Glynn’s fine break almost created a try for replacement back rower Marco Mama.

The hosts seized a narrow advantage when Tom Kessell muscled his way over for a converted score following Michael Pope’s dart clear, but Bristol hit back almost immediately.

Callum Braley and Andy Short showed neat handling to send Luke Eves over in the corner, while Adrian Jarvis struck a superb conversion as Andy Robinson’s men regained a one point lead.

But the lead changed hands once more as Kieran Goss latched onto turnover ball to fly over in the corner for his second of the afternoon. Hallett converted to put the Pirates 21-15 up and – despite a late onslaught which saw Bristol camped on the tryline - the Cornishmen held out for the victory.
