MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs Leeds Carnegie

Bristol Rugby 21-17 Leeds Carnegie

Bristol Rugby made a winning start to the B&I Cup campaign, coming from behind to beat Leeds Carnegie 21-17 on Sunday.

Rhys Lawrence crossed in the first period, before Andy Short and a late Ben Glynn touchdown ensured the victory at a sodden Memorial Stadium.

Neither side could gain a stranglehold on proceedings early on and, despite an Auguy Slowik half-break and a jinking dart from Sammy Speight, Bristol couldn’t find a way through a stubborn defence.

And, after Sam Lockwood was yellow carded for infringing in the scrum, Gaston Cortes was held up over the line as the home pack turned the screw.

Bristol did eventually make their pressure pay on the half hour mark, as Rhys Lawrence reacted fastest to pounce on a loose ball deep in Leeds territory and slide over. Robinson slotted the extras to give his side a 7-0 lead.

Leeds fly half Glyn Hughes saw his penalty attempt sail wide, before Jake Armstrong capitalized on a slip to bundle his way across the whitewash from close range and bring the scores level.

The visitors went in front on the stroke of half time when Glyn Hughes converted a penalty goal from the angle to turn the game on its head at 7-10.

Leeds pushed further ahead after the break when Jarad Williams powered his way over from close range after winger Rob Martey had accelerated clear.

Mariano Sambucetti was inches away from muscling his way over, but the seasoned lock was thwarted by a spirited Leeds defensive effort.

Bristol reduced the deficit following a lung-bursting Mitch Eadie break. The back-rower broke downfield and, after several phases, Adrian Jarvis’ clever grubber was collected by replacement Andy Short, who dabbed down for a converted try.

And Ben Glynn’s late try ensured Bristol came from behind to record a fourth successive win in all competitions and secure a 21-17 victory.
