MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs London Scottish

Bristol Rugby 31-18 London Scottish

Bristol Rugby bounced back from an opening day defeat with a bonus-point 31-18 victory over London Scottish at the Memorial Stadium.

Andy Robinson’s men notched four tries on Sunday, scoring through Marco Mama, James Merriman, Glen Townson and a penalty try.

Mark Irish saw yellow for London Scottish, who survived a first half onslaught to lead 10-7 at the break.

In a dominant opening period – in which Bristol controlled territory – Adam D’Arcy came closest to breaking the deadlock, coming within a whisker of dabbing down only for the ball to squirm loose.

For the first half hour, despite being camped in the opposition 22, Bristol couldn’t find a way through a stubborn home defence although Adrian Jarvis and Charlie Amesbury almost burst clear.

The hosts took a deserved lead when Marco Mama collected Luke Eves’ offload to crash over from close range for a converted score.

But Scottish drew level on the stroke of half time as Miles Mantella took advantage of a slick counter attack; latching onto Jim Thompson’s smart grubber-kick to touch down for a converted try in the corner.

Lee Millar put London Scottish 7-10 in front at half-time, slotting a drop-goal from thirty metres to silence the Memorial Stadium faithful.

The Exiles were unfortunate not to extend their lead almost immediately after the restart as Lee Millar scathed through a gaping opening, only to be hauled down by James Grindal just five metres from the line.

Bristol were handed the initiative when former prop Mark Irish saw yellow for infringing at the scrum. Ryan Edwards thought he had gone over soon after, but referee Greg Mcdonald adjudged that the ball had been held up.

Andy Robinson’s men eventually made their relentless pressure pay, earning a penalty try after a strong scrum. Jarvis slotted the extras to turn the game on its head and put Bristol 14-10 up.

James Merriman crashed over for a converted try following a strong surge from the pack to give Bristol breathing space, before Lee Millar reduced the visitors’ deficit with a long-range penalty goal moments later.

Replacement scrum half Ruki Tipuna proved to be a constant threat to the Exiles during the second period and the Kiwi almost sealed the bonus point when he darted clear close to the Exiles’ line.

But London Scottish set up a nervy finale when Lee Millar scored in the corner on a rare foray into Bristol territory.

Adrian Jarvis gave the hosts breathing space with a penalty, before replacement lock Glen Townson sealed a bonus point, rumbling over in the final play of the game.
