MATCH DAY REPORT -Clifton RFC vs Bristol Rugby

Bristol Rugby 76-0 Clifton RFC

Bristol Rugby completed their pre-season campaign with a 76-0 drubbing of Clifton RFC in the traditional annual fixture.

Andy Robinson’s men scored twelve tries in a convincing victory, with triallist Sammy Speight grabbing a hat-trick.

Ross Johnston saw red for an alleged tip tackle, while Bruce Douglas and James Hall were also sin-binned as the visitors were reduced to twelve men in the first half.

Bristol went in front on the five-minute mark when referee James Sullivan awarded a penalty try following a powerful surge at the scrum. Roberts slotted the extras to put his side 7-0 up.

Robinson’s men stretched the advantage soon after, courtesy of Callum Braley’s solo effort – racing in from twenty metres for an unconverted try.

Sammy Speight was next to cross the whitewash, capitalizing on Marco Mama’s break to coast in under the posts. Roberts struck the conversion as Bristol moved into a commanding 19-0 lead.

James Hall added a fourth try midway through the opening period when the prop latched onto Ben Skirving’s offload to crash over for a converted score.

Minutes later, Speight went over for his second of the afternoon, cantering over in the corner after Marco Mama’s chargedown of Charlie Foley’s attempted clearance kick.

Bristol were reduced to twelve men before half-time when Ross Johnston saw red for a tip tackle, before Bruce and James Hall were sent to the sin-bin in quick succession.

Immediately after the restart, Luke Eves accelerated through the Clifton defence to fly over. Roberts saw his conversion attempt sail wide, so the score remained 36-0.

Bristol powered further ahead with another penalty try at scrum time, before Tarquin Ledner was sin-binned for Clifton as the procession of cards continued.

Next, Mitch Eadie waltzed through a crowd of defenders to dab down for a converted try, while Sammy Speight went over for his hat-trick moments later.

Luke Eves’ converted score made it 62-0, before a James Merriman brace rounded off a comprehensive 76-0 victory.
