MATCH DAY REPORT -Exeter Chiefs vs Bristol Rugby

Bristol Rugby 7-51 Exeter Chiefs

Bristol Rugby conceded eight tries as Exeter Chiefs recorded a 51-7 victory in the pre-season clash on Saturday

Fautua Otto crossed for a late consolation at Sandy Park, but Andy Robinson can have no complaints about the comprehensive defeat.

Exeter broke the deadlock after an abrasive opening period when Henry Slade struck a three-pointer from the angle.

Bristol show plenty of endeavor in the early exchanges, but could have fell further behind on the ten minute mark, only for Luke Cowan-Dickie to spill possession with the tryline gaping.

The home side did cross soon after however, as Ben White trundled in from close range for a converted try, moving the score to 10-0.

Henry Slade stretched the Chiefs’ advantage when he stretched over after a sustained spell of pressure. The fly half converted his own try as Exeter seized control of proceedings.

Exeter added a third try as Fetu’u Vainakolo muscled his way across the whitewash, while Henry Slade added the extras.

With Andy Robinson’s men struggling to stem the flow of attacks, flanker Tom Johnson showed his international credentials, accelerating through several Bristol defenders to dab down. Slade saw his conversion sail wide, so the score remained 29-0.

On the stroke of the interval, Phil Dollman capitalized on a gaping overlap to fly over for a converted try. Outfought in the opening forty minutes, Bristol went in at the break trailing 36-0.

The visitors rang the changes after the break, introducing Otto, Hobson, Townson, Braley, Douglas, Roberts and Mama to the game.

Exeter spurned two gilt-edged opportunities through Arnott and Vainakolo, before Henry Slade did eventually slide over for an unconverted effort following good work from replacement Ceri Sweeney.

The procession of tries continued as Stu Townsend was next to cross, although Sweeney couldn’t add the conversion.

Bristol did grab a consolation score late on when Fautua Otto scythed through an opening to touch down, while Tristan Roberts converted in front of the posts.

In the last play of the game, Tom James collected his smart chip ahead to cross for an unconverted try, as Bristol fell to a 51-7 defeat at Sandy Park.
