MATCH DAY PREVIEW -Bristol Rugby vs Rotherham Titans

Joe Joyce set for Cup start

Bristol Rugby turn their attentions to the B&I Cup when Rotherham Titans visit the Memorial Stadium in the quarter-finals of the competition on Friday (7.45pm KO).

Bristol - who finished second in Pool Five with six victories and one defeat – name a side with a blend of youth and experience.

Academy trio Auguy Slowik, Ryan Edwards and Callum Braley start in the backline, while Charlie Amesbury retains his place on the wing having bagged a hat-trick in his last outing.

Ollie Hayes returns for his first competitive start since the Pool Five clash with Aberavon in January, while Jason Hobson and Joe Joyce – who signed a contract extension earlier this week – are also selected.

Exciting front row prospect Ellis Genge is named on the bench alongside Mariano Sambucetti, who could make his 153rd first team appearance on Friday.

MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs Rotherham Titans

Bristol Rugby 39-24 Rotherham Titans

Bristol Rugby secured safe passage into the B&I Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 39-24 victory over Rotherham Titans on Friday.

The home side scored five tries at the Memorial Stadium as Charlie Amesbury and Iain Grieve grabbed two apiece, while Jack Tovey also crossed late in the first half.

Bristol will welcome Leeds Carnegie to the West Country in the next round of the competition.

Charlie Amesbury continued his try-scoring form inside five minutes when the winger was quickest to react to Auguy Slowik’s intelligent grubber kick, sliding over for an unconverted score.

Juan Pablo Socino reduced arrears with a penalty goal, before Sean Scanlon stunned the home faithful with a sublime solo effort, racing in from sixty metres, while Socino slotted the extras.

The ever-reliable Socino converted a three pointer soon after as Bristol’s defensive line strayed offside, moving the Titans 5-13 ahead.

Rotherham enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first period and came close to a second try when Jack Roberts was held up over the whitewash following a close-range rampage.

Socino did add a penalty on the stroke of the interval, but Bristol found a route back into the game in fortuitous circumstances before half-time.

Dan White’s loose pass deep in Titans territory was scooped up by Jack Tovey, who cantered in from twenty metres. Jarvis converted from the angle to keep Bristol in touch at 12-16.

Juan Pablo Socino edged Rotherham further ahead with a penalty goal within three minutes of the restart, but Iain Grieve’s second try in as many matches drew the home side level at 19-19.

The flanker touched down from the back of a well-worked driving lineout, while Adrian Jarvis’ converted as Bristol fought their way back into the tie.

In a lively second period, Curtis Wilson had a try chalked off for an adjudged forward pass as Rotherham – marshaled by the impressive Socino - continued to press forward.

But it was Bristol who regained the advantage on the hour mark, courtesy of Adrian Jarvis’ simple penalty goal.

Rotherham regained the initiative when Jack Roberts engineered another opening in the Bristol midfield and – after slick interplay between the Titans’ backline – Michael Keating had the simplest of tasks to dab down.

The lead changed hands again as Iain Grieve crossed for his second of the evening, fending off three defenders to dive over for a converted try after a rampaging break.

And, when Jack Preece was sin-binned late on, Adrian Jarvis’ penalty goal gave Bristol some breathing space.

In the dying moments, Charlie Amesbury bundled his way over for Bristol’s fifth of the evening, booking a place in the B&I Cup semi-finals against Leeds Carnegie.
