MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs Cornish Pirates

Bristol Rugby 46-33 Cornish Pirates

Marco Mama became the first forward to score four tries in over five-hundred league games as Bristol Rugby romped to a 46-33 victory over Cornish Pirates on Sunday.

Andy Robinson’s men scored seven tries in glorious sunshine at the Memorial Stadium, as Mama (4), Auguy Slowik (2) and Nick Koster all posted scores.

Bristol almost found an opening early on when Adam Hughes released George Watkins, only for the ball to spill loose.

But the home supporters didn’t have to wait long to see the first try though, as Marco Mama crashed over for a converted score on the five minute mark.

With the Pirates defence stretched by Mitch Eadie’s powerful break, the ball was moved wide and Mama fended off two tacklers to bundle his way across the whitewash.

Kieran Hallett’s penalty goal put Cornish Pirates on the scoreboard, before Kieran Goss went close before being thwarted by a fine Auguy Slowik cover tackle.

Hallett added another three-pointer to reduce the deficit to 7-6 midway through the first period, but Bristol stretched ahead with a well-worked try soon after.

Marco Mama grabbed his second of the afternoon when the flanker muscled his way over from close range. Nicky Robinson slotted the extras to move the score to 14-6.

And Nick Koster – who penned a two-year deal in the week – celebrated his new contract in style, showing quick thinking to race over for a try, although Nicky Robinson couldn’t convert.

Cornish Pirates looked dangerous with ball in hand and, late in the first period, Craig Holland finished off a flowing attacking move to slide over for an unconverted try.

Marco Mama completed his hat-trick before the half-time break, picking a sublime line to carve an opening, before Aaron Carpenter responded for the Pirates from close range.

Within five minutes of the restart, Auguy Slowik latched onto Andy Short’s offload to dab down for a converted score, extending Bristol’s advantage to 31-18.

But, once again, Cornish Pirates hit back when Craig Holland capitalized on an overlap to accelerate over in the corner, while Hallett converted from the touchline.

In a high-scoring affair, Marco Mama dabbed down from a driving lineout to notch a record-breaking fourth of the afternoon, before Adrian Jarvis saw his penalty goal attempt sail wide.

With ten minutes remaining, replacement prop Jack Andrew kept Pirates in touch, going over for the visitors’ fourth try of the afternoon and securing a losing bonus point in the process.

And Kieran Hallett closed the gap further with a long-range penalty goal, before Adrian Jarvis struck a three-pointer for the home side.

Bristol sealed the win late on as Auguy Slowik pounced on a mistake to scoop up the ball and stretch across as Andy Robinson’s men remain top of the Greene King IPA Championship.
