MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs Jersey

Bristol Rugby 54-14 Jersey

Bristol Rugby stormed to a convincing 54-14 victory over Jersey on Sunday.

The hosts scored eight tries – four in each half – to seal the bonus point win over the Channel Islanders.

Ross Rennie scored a brace on his Bristol debut, while Luke Baldwin also crossed on his first start. Ruki Tipuna, Ross Johnston, Ben Glynn and Luke Eves all posted scores, while Bristol were awarded a penalty try in the second period.

Bristol flew out of the traps and raced in front inside ten minutes when the lively Luke Baldwin darted through a gap to fly in under the posts for a converted score.

George Watkins and Andy Short both went close with stunning breaks, before the home side extended their lead midway through the first period.

Debutant Ross Rennie dabbed down from close range after a well-worked driving lineout, while Nicky Robinson added the conversion to move his side 14-0 ahead.

But Jersey found a route back into the game when Mark Foster slid over in the corner after Tom Brown had engineered space inside the Bristol 22. O’Connor converted superbly to halve the deficit.

As Bristol pressed forward in numbers, Nicky Robinson saw his effort disallowed, before Luke Eves stretched his way over the whitewash for a third converted try.

The centre outmuscled two defenders to touch down, giving Andy Robinson’s men a commanding 21-7 advantage.

And there was still time before the half-time interval for Ross Johnston to seal the bonus point, crossing in the corner after taking advantage of Nicky Robinson’s fine searching pass.

Bristol pushed further ahead almost immediately after the restart as Ben Glynn latched onto Ross Johnston’s offload to coast in for a converted try in front of the Blackthorn End.

In an entertaining second period, Grant Pointer bundled his way over for a converted score to give Jersey hope, but replacement scrum half Ruki Tipuna added a sixth with his first touch of the ball to put Bristol 40-14 up and cruising.

Bristol’s dominant scrum – a thorn in the visitors’ side all afternoon – was rewarded with a penalty try soon after, before Ross Rennie’s second on the stroke of the full-time took Bristol past the fifty point mark for the first time in the Greene King IPA Championship this season.
