MATCH DAY REPORT -Bristol Rugby vs Plymouth Albion
Bristol Rugby 43-12 Plymouth Albion
Bristol Rugby moved to the top of the Greene King IPA Championship with a 43-12 defeat of Plymouth Albion on Sunday.
The hosts scored seven tries in a commanding display, as George Watkins (2), Andy Short (2), Marco Mama (2) and Jack Wallace crossed for a sixth successive league victory.
In their first foray into opposition territory, Bristol came away with seven points as Andy Short touched down under the posts for a converted try.
The winger carved an opening inside three minutes after being released by skipper Nicky Robinson.
Eoghan Grace almost went over for Plymouth – only to be thwarted by a fine Jack Wallace cover tackle – before Tom Bowen and Lloyd Fairbrother squandered gilt-edged opportunities in quick succession.
And Bristol made the visitors pay for their wastefulness, crossing for three tries in the space of four minutes.
First, Marco Mama took advantage of a dominant scrum to dab down from close range, before George Watkins cantered across in the corner following a flowing counter attack.
Moments later, Andy Short collected Jack Wallace’s pass to beat his marker and fly over in style to seal the bonus point.
With Plymouth shellshocked, the Bristol onslaught continued as George Watkins made light work of Chris Elder to race in from forty-five metres for his second of the afternoon.
On the stroke of half-time, Albion captain Rhys Oakley powered his way over the whitewash to reduce the deficit to 31-7.
George Watkins almost gave Bristol the perfect start to the second period, but the winger couldn’t reach his kick ahead.
Andy Robinson’s men did add a sixth on the hour mark as Jack Wallace fended off two red shirts to notch his first try in Bristol colours, while Nicky Robinson struck the extras.
Marco Mama grabbed his second late on – touching down under a pile of bodies, before Albion’s Jared Saunders went over for a last-gasp consolation try.
