MATCH DAY REPORT -Leeds Carnegie vs Bristol Rugby

Bristol Rugby 19-24 Leeds Carnegie

Bristol Rugby fell to a narrow 24-19 defeat at Headingley on Saturday, as Leeds Carnegie ended the unbeaten B&I Cup record to finish top of Pool Five.

The visitors scored three tries, courtesy of Auguy Slowik, Bryan Rennie and Ryan Edwards, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an organized home outfit.

Despite the defeat, Bristol – who had already confirmed a place in the knockout stages - are guaranteed a home quarter final.

Leeds took an early lead when Glyn Hughes capitalized on ill-discipline to strike an angled penalty goal after two minutes.

And the home side stretched the advantage midway through the first period when Matt Smith rumbled over from close range for a converted try.

Bristol enjoyed long spells of possession, but couldn’t find a way through a stubborn Leeds defence, although Bryan Rennie came closest to breaking clear for the visitors.

Glyn Hughes added his second penalty goal of the afternoon to put Leeds Carnegie in control at 13-0, before Auguy Slowik gave Bristol a route back into the game on the stroke of the break.

The winger latched onto Nicky Robinson’s long pass to scamper over from twenty metres for an unconverted try.

Josh Griffin’s unconverted touch down soon after the restart gave the hosts some breathing space, but Bryan Rennie finished off a well-worked move from the lineout to reduce the deficit to six points at 18-12.

Glyn Hughes’ penalty goal kept the scoreboard ticking over, while Bristol lost replacement lock Mark Sorenson moments later to the sin-bin for killing the ball.

Ryan Edwards’ converted try on the hour mark put the visitors in touch of a remarkable comeback, but another Hughes three-pointer ensured Leeds came away with the spoils.
