Bristol Academy U18s 28 - 17 Northampton Saints U18s

Bristol Academy U18s produced a stunning display to sweep aside a strong Northampton Saints U18s 28-17 at Clifton RFC on Monday.

Mike Hall’s side – made up largely of youngsters from Filton College, Colston’s School and Hartpury – scored two tries in either half in front of a large crowd at Bristol Rugby’s training base.

Filton’s Jacon Unwin (2), and Colston duo Alex Haynes and Ben Foley all crossed as the hosts came from behind to seal an impressive win.

Northampton started brightly and, aided by a powerful pack, took an early lead courtesy of an unconverted try.

But Bristol hit back to regain the advantage when winger Jacob Unwin muscled his way over in the corner. Mark Cooke, who has represented the first team in the B&I Cup this season, converted from the angle to put his side 7-5 up.

Unwin capitalized on a clever grubber kick through to scoop up possession and bundle over for Bristol’s second converted score.

Filton’s Joe Joyce was held up over the line as the home side pushed forward again, before Northampton reduced the deficit to 14-12 with a converted try in the corner.

Bristol increased the intensity in the second half with England U18s centre Nick Carpenter showing flashes of brilliance and making a series of line-breaks.

The ever-threatening Ben Foley rounded off a slick backline move to dive in under the posts for a converted try and fellow Colston’s product Alex Haynes capped a fine performance at scrum-half with a close range touch down on the hour mark – moving the score to 28-12.

Northampton rounded off a pulsating encounter with a last-gasp effort in front of the posts, but Bristol held on for the well-deserved 28-17 victory.
