Townsend Appointed Academy Coach
Club make Academy appointment
Bristol Rugby are pleased to confirm the appointment of Gary Townsend into the role of Academy Coach and Player Development Manager ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.
“Gary is a proud Bristolian with a vast knowledge of the local Rugby landscape"
Townsend – National Player Development Manager with the RFU since 2010 – agrees a three-year deal.
As well as working closely with local schools and combination clubs to increase the quality of provision available to players in the city, Townsend’s role will encompass all aspects of player and coach development across the Academy's Developing Player Programme (DPP), Elite Player Development Group (EPDG) and Full Time Academy.
Academy Manager Mike Hall told bristolrugby.co.uk: “I’m delighted we have managed to secure Gary's services. He’s a vastly experienced professional and will add a huge amount to the work the Academy do within the Rugby community.
“Gary is a proud Bristolian with a vast knowledge of the local Rugby landscape, which makes his appointment even more exciting. Gary has done some incredible work with the RFU through the revolutionary "Shaping the Game" project, which will benefit English Rugby player development for years to come.”
Townsend added: “I’m excited about the opportunity to join Bristol Rugby at an ambitious time for the Club.
“Alongside Mike and the other Academy staff, we want to put in place robust systems and structures for players, coaches and teachers at the younger age groups which, not only provide Bristol with its professional players in the future, but help us to achieve the Bristol Sport vision of offering more young players access to quality sports provision.”
