EPDG Gold Member scores in Plate semi-final versus South Africa
Will Thomas scored his first international try as Wales bowed out of the Tokyo IRB World Sevens Series at the quarter-final stage.
The EPDG Gold member helped his side to three successive victories on the opening day at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium, as Wales beat Russia, Kenya and Argentina progress through to the Cup competition knock out stages.
Richie Pugh’s squad went down 21-14 to eventual winners Australia in the quarter-finals, before South Africa proved too strong in the Plate semi-finals, winning 22-10, despite Thomas crossing for a try.
Wales opened their account with a narrow 10-7 defeat of Russia, before making easy work of Kenya with a 22-0 triumph.
Thomas and his teammates secured a hard-fought win over Argentina in the Pool decider, beating the Pumas 17-5.
Next up, Wales will head to Scotland for the Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens at Scotstoun Stadium on 5-6 May. Currently seventh in the overall series points table, Wales have been drawn against Scotland, Russia and South Africa.
“It’s been an incredible experience,” said Thomas. “To represent Wales and to be involved with such a talented squad is something that I’m very proud of.
“The boys put in a huge effort over the past fortnight and we’ve come up against some really strong opposition. I was delighted to be part of it and to score a try against South Africa was the icing on the cake.”
