South West lose both games at the U18s Festival

EPDG Gold members Sam Hanks and Joe Joyce started in both of the South West U18s fixtures last weekend, but couldn't prevent their side from suffering two successive defeats in the RFU’s 2012 National Divisional U18 Festival.

The pair, who play for Filton Academy, featured in a narrow 32-31 loss to North U18s on Friday, before going down 36-12 at the hands of London & South East Division at Broadstreet RFC last Sunday.

The South West came within a point of beating the North, leading 31-22 before lock Oli Parkinson’s second try of the match, along with the boot of Myerscough College centre Haley, sealed the win for the opposition.

On Sunday, in an error-strewn performance, the South West went behind in the opening minute of the match and, at one stage, trailed 31-5 before grabbing their second try.

South West U18s team manager David Penberthy commented: “We’re obviously disappointed to have lost both games because and we thought we had done enough to have grabbed one win.

“While we need to look at our defence, we did look dangerous when we got the ball, so there’s a bit of work still to do. I think the boys found it tough with just a days rest between their two games."
