Quartet feature for England U18s in narrow defeat to Northampton

Four Bristol EPDG Gold Group members represented England U18s against Northampton Saints Academy last Sunday.

Joe Joyce, Nick Carpenter, Steve Uren and Callum Braley all featured in the narrow 18-14 defeat at Franklin Gardens.

Watched by a healthy crowd, the Saints youngsters took an 18-0 lead courtesy of three first-half tries.

England staged a second half fight back and crossed for two converted scores to set up a nervy finish. However, the hosts held on to record the win.

Academy Manager Mike Hall was in attendance to cast his eye over the performances of the Bristol representatives.

“It was fantastic to see four Bristol players on the pitch on Sunday,” he said. “Northampton had a very physical U19s side which dominated large parts of the first period.

“But England fought back well once they had got to grips with the speed and physicality of the game.

“The England set-up is a fiercely competitive environment and competition for places to play in the upcoming International fixtures will be really tough.

“Joe, Steve, Callum and Nick all acquitted themselves well through their performances on the pitch, but more importantly, conducted themselves in a manner reflecting the values of Bristol Rugby".
