Bristol EPDG Silver Group players Julian Mogg, Ben Gompels and Andy Uren attended a South West Divisional U16s training day at Coombe Dingle on last Sunday.

The players were selected from the recent U16s County programme which saw Bristol face Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Cornwall.

Hooker Gompels performed impressively, showing strong set-piece skills and making a big contribution around the pitch.

Half back pairing of Uren and Mogg were rewarded for marshalling the team to three victories from four games.

Academy coach Matt Sherratt commented: "This is a fitting reward for the hard work the players have put in since September.

“If we are honest, we’re a little disappointed a few more of our players did not make the cut. However, the South West is a hot bed of rugby so the competition for places is always intense.

“Ben, Andy and Julian have shown a good range of skills in their work with the EPDG, but most importantly a desire to improve as well as a willingness to listen and learn".

At U18s level, EPDG Gold Group member, AASE Scholar and Filton College captain Sam Hanks has been selected in the 30-man South West squad.

Hanks impressed in his games for Somerset and will look to carry his form into the upcoming weekend and the remaining AASE fixtures with Filton.

Academy Manager Mike Hall added: "We are really pleased for Sam. He has had a couple of opportunities to train with the first team squad here this season and has done really well, impressing coaches and players alike.

“We wish him all the best for the development weekend in early February."
