Nigel Redman with his nephew, Wales prop Jamie Corsi and the JWC Trophy at Rodney Parade
Bristol Rugby supporters will get an early chance to watch live rugby at Rodney Parade with the England U20s side making it their base for the group stages of the inaugural IRB Junior World Championship in June – paving the way for Bristol Rugby as they prepare to make the Newport ground their temporary home.
Under 20 Grand Slam champions England will be based in Newport for the Pool stages of the tournament, with crunch Pool C matches against Fiji (June 6), Canada (June 10) and Australia (June 14) as they bid to top the Pool and make it to the Championship semi-finals on June 18.
And Bristol supporters will be hoping to see centre Luke Eves selected for the England squad having played in every game in England's recent U20s Grand Slam campaign.
Former England and Lions lock Redman grew up less than 10 miles from Newport, in Rumney, Cardiff and his 20 year old nephew Jamie Corsi packs down at prop for the Dragons, making Newport a ‘home from home’ for the West Country-based coach who is looking forward to participating in the first global tournament at Under 20 level.
“It’s fantastic this inaugural Under 20 competition is taking place in the UK. I’ve been to many of the IRB age grade tournaments and what is so exciting is that every one of them unearths some real stars of the future.”
“You only have to look at recent tournaments to see the likes of Gavin Henson, Luke McAlister and Danny Cipriani coming through and there will be more great names unearthed in Wales this year who will grace the senior international stage in the not too distant future.
“In my opinion, it is a real privilege to see some of those stars in action aged 18 and 19 before they step onto the big stage.”
And for rugby fans in Bristol, Redman believes this is the perfect opportunity to test out Rodney Parade, Bristol Rugby’s adopted home for next season.
“Rodney Parade is a great place to play rugby, I’m sure Bristol fans will enjoy it there, and what better way to get to know the ground than to support our England side in this fantastic Under 20 world championship next month?"
“From an England Under 20 perspective, being based in Newport makes it easy for fans in the West Country to provide some much valued vocal support. For supporters in the Bristol, Bath and Gloucester areas in particular, it’s only a short drive to Rodney Parade so I’m hoping that our ‘local’ support will spur us on and help us reach the semis.”
England are seeded sixth in this competition and although England completed a Grand Slam of victories in the recent Under 20 Six Nations, Redman believes that is the correct position for his side going into the tournament.
“New Zealand, South Africa and Australia should all be strong sides as you’d expect, but France have a good team and so have Wales so the teams above us all deserve their positions. Having said that, we have a very special group of players and management, as shown by our recent clean sweep in the Under 20 Six Nations Championship and we just have to ensure we are ready for the challenge in four weeks’ time."
“We have a very physical pool with Australia, Fiji and Canada. Fiji are first up on June 6 and it is vital we prepare well and put in a good performance against them on Match Day One to kick start our Championship campaign. Next up is Canada on June 10 before we face the top seeds in the Pool, Australia on June 14."
“It is a very clear-cut tournament format but it is brutal in that only one team from each Pool goes to the semis so any slip-up will count dearly.”
