At an eerie and almost deserted Franklin's Gardens, Northampton Wanderers and Bristol United served up an action packed Guinness 'A' League match on Monday afternoon.
Duncan Wood

"I cover all games, home and away, so there are some pretty long trips. I usually travel up on the day of the game. I'm obviously still playing for Clifton so sometimes I'm playing on a Saturday and then working on the Sunday. It means that I miss a few Clifton games when Bristol play on Saturdays."
"On a home matchday, I probably arrive at the ground around 12 o'clock and meet up with our cameraman and get everything sorted up on the gantry. I also make sure that the opposition's video analyst is sorted out as well."
"I'm then set until kick off time. My computer is set up and linked to the camera. As the match progresses, I'll code the game live in terms of scrums, lineouts, phase play, kick returns, restarts, tries etc."
"I'll do that for both sides and collate the clips so that, at half time for example, the coaches can take a look if they want to."
"It's the same routine in the second half and, once that's all done, I'll scan through the game to make sure it's all correct and then compress the file to make it a lot smaller."
"I'll then transfer the file to John Brain and Paul Hull's computers so that they can take it home for the evening and Richard Hill will get a DVD copy from the cameraman. So, all the coaches can study the game in the evening at their own leisure."
"I will then go home and work on the individual clips. Every player will have an individual performance analysis. "
Basically, I have to go through the game at a pretty slow pace looking at effective and ineffective tackles, missed tackles, attacking breakdowns they get to, passes, ball carries, kick returns catches etc. Anything that can have a major impact on the game."
"That can take between two hours and four hours depending on whether we've played well and how much attacking we've done."
"If it's a Sunday game, I do it on the same evening but if we play on Friday night or Saturday afternoon then I've got the weekend to do it."
"I'll then be in for 8am on Monday morning and load it all up onto the server both the game and the individual codes so, by 8:30am, if any players are in or the coaches want to see anything then it's all there done and dusted for them."
"That's about it for a matchday. It can be quite a long day and go on well into the evening but I can at least do some of it at home!"
"Some of the players ask for individual stuff to be prepared. The system we have here, Sportscode, allows us to do that kind of thing. A lot of players like to take home their individual clips."
"We've got the three computers up here which are available for the players and, more and more people are starting to use them, but you do get a few familiar faces mostly amongst the younger pros!"
"But some of the senior guys who have used this sort of thing at international level, like Mark Regan, make use of them but some of the more 'old school' players like Dave Hilton and Gareth Llewellyn who haven't had this available throughout their careers tend to use it more to look at the opposition."
"The coaches will sometimes also ask for individual compilations so they can review things on a one to one basis with a player."
"It's also useful in terms of looking at players we might be looking to bring into the club. I might get asked to pull a few clips together for research purposes."
"In terms of preparing for a game, we try and get the last three games our opponent has played. Usually, one of those games will have been on Sky which is easy because we can record it ourselves. We don't actually get great analytical footage from Sky because they film it from an aesthetically pleasing point of view."
"For example, rather than a camera filming from above a lineout, they'll do it from behind the thrower. It's a bonus though as we have to pay for DVDs to be sent to us."
"Those usually arrive on a Tuesday and I code those in exactly the same way so that the coaches can start to plan how they're going to attack and defend."
"We try and get the past three games because, although teams will play in a similar way, they will mix things up and use different lineout moves and backs moves for example."
"We also cover the United games. Ben Sturnham does some coding on those and we also have a student on work experience who helps out which is a big help. I mainly focus on the first XV but do get involved with the United."
"I've got a mixed role. I've been here for seven or eight years an dmy role has changed every year probably!."
"This year I've focussed more on the analysis and helped out with the United and supported Corin less than last year which was his first at the club."
"CP has a lot of things in place now so I can concentrate on analysis, the United and also kicking sessions."
"I've worked on a one on one basis with Jason Strange, David Hill and Ed Barnes. We film them and look at it on the computers where we can slow it down and freeze frame it etc and see what's going well and what we have to tweak slightly."
