Despite the injury problems at present and the tough upcoming league campaign, Richard Hill has named a team which he hopes will be good enough to win at Plymouth with Danny Gray pulling the strings at fly half.
Having two of his fit players (Hentie Martens & Mark Woodrow) cup tied has just added to the selection headache this week and only two backs are named amongst the replacements.

Starting with the backs, there are starts for Danny Gray and Owen Evans.

Danny, of course, excelled in the second half of Monday night's win over Henley Hawks whilst Owen has been on England Students duty of late. Both, however, more than played their part in Bristol's Powergen Shield success last season.

The centres remain unchanged with Manu Contepomi the cover on the bench and Ross Blake returns at scrum half with Greg Nicholls named amongst the replacements.

It's rotation time in the front row with Dave Hilton and Darren Crompton returning with Neil Clark continuing in the hooker position. Alex Clarke and Jason Hobson move to the bench to accommodate them.

Olly Kohn will be partnered by Ollie Hodge in the second row as Jim Brownrigg reverts to number eight as Rik Martin-Redman failed a fitness test on the knee he tweaked against Henley on Monday.

When the team was announced, Richard Hill stressed that the whole club are taking the Powergen Shield seriously.

"The Cup represents a good opportunity for us to gain confidence and also experience."

"To be fair, the bigger game is the league fixture at Plymouth in two weeks. But, we've been having big discussions about this as a squad recently and we feel that the worst thing to do would be to go down there with our minds not 100% on the job and take a hammering."

"So, I've picked a strong side and we hope to perform as well as we can down there. It will be fantastic if we win but we're aware of Plymouth's home record."

"The Cup has brought the best out of this club in the past couple of years, even last season when we won at Otley and beat Orrell who were second in the league at the time."

"We've had a lift from playing in the Cup and we've produced some of our best performances, for example, Wasps and Gloucester this season."

"In terms of the team, RMR failed a fitness test on his knee this morning. He's not quite 100% so we're not going to take a risk on him."

"Had it been the league game, we probably would have taken a chance on him but there are some very big league games coming up and we need him fit and healthy. He's missed too much rugby this season, we've missed him and we'll need him in the league run in."

"It's a good chance for Danny Gray as well. He looked very sharp against Henley and showed some very good skills. It's been a difficult few months for him as he hasn't had much rugby with us."

"But he's had glowing reports from Dings and the whole squad has 100% confidence in him and know that he'll come in and do a good job on Sarurday."

"The front row changes are purely rotational. Alex Clarke and Hobbo have had a couple of tough games so it's time for some fresh legs and hilts and DC are raring to go."
